There are approximately 1.67 billion Skype users world wide *. 2017 when the thread was created, there's only 183 people that identified they had the same question. Putting on my pragmatic hat here for a moment, since the 23rd of Nov. I see that Microsoft has been ignoring the same question from many I don't know that this happened, but I've seen similar in my own experience. Speaking from a perspective of been a Product Manager for both hardware and software, it's entirely plausible there were folks who removed the icons from the status bar only to complain to Microsoft that they needed a way to know if they were "Away" when they didn't mean to be. More importantly, it shows whether you have connectivity or not. It appears (IMO) that this is a design decision by Microsoft because their Menu Bar does more than just give you access to sub-menu items the icon(s) displays status like "Away", "Do Not Disturb" or "Invisible". I use both OneDrive and Skype, both have animated icons and neither can be removed from the Menu Bar. This indicates that there is no static icon file that you can edit or delete. For example, if a lot of people use this status, the value of presence in Skype for Business (Lync) will be greatly reduced.These icons appear to be rendered (on the fly) as they are animated. According to Microsoft, “Some companies remove the Appear Away status because it can interfere with presence predictability. It’s possible that you don’t have the option to set your presence status to Appear Away that may be by design. Unable to set your status to Appear Away? You can also set privacy and Do Not Disturb optins.
To configure even more status options, click the gear menu and select Tools -> Options -> Status. There, you can choose the number of minutes for showing as Inactive when your computer has been idle, and the number of minutes for changing your status from Inactive to Away. You can also manually set your status by clicking on the drop-down menu underneath your name:įor more information about presence statuses, what they mean, and how they get set, check out this Microsoft support page. For example, if you have a meeting on your Outlook calendar, Skype for Business will automatically set your status to “In a meeting” during the scheduled time. Your presence status will be changed automatically by your Outlook and Skype for Business activities. This information in Skype for Office 365 is part of “presence,” conveyed by an availability status and a color-coded presence indicator that appears next to your picture or name.
In Skype for Business, much like in other communication and instant messaging applications, you’re able to convey information about your current status–for example, whether you’re free or busy.
